The news has been out in some media that Pakistan ranks top on the list of countries with reference to porn search online. However, denials have also been published both by Google and the Internet Service provider Association of Pakistan.
Last week, Fox News and some other media channels broke the news that Pakistan tops the list of countries with most porn searches on the Internet. The annoying title of ‘Pornistan’ thus coined for Pakistan also evoked condemnation and disturbance among many Pakistanis, as reported by NDTV, July 20, 2010. Dawn News then spoke to many people in various big cities of the country and concluded that the statistics leading to this news might not be very correct.
On Saturday, July 17, 2010, Therese Lim of Google’ communications and Public Affairs, Southeast Asia team, emailed the daily Dawn to admit that the statistics could have been wrong since the sample size used for concluding about porn popularity in Pakistan was statistically insignificant. Internet Service provider Association of Pakistan has also denied the reliability of the report declaring Pakistan as the most porn-hungry country. However, some Pakistanis are said to have agreed with the findings – just as a personal opinion.
