Sexually transmitted Diseases and Sexually transmitted Infections

STD or Sexually transmitted disease is one of the most common diseases which are spread widely in the USA. This disease is also named as sexually transmitted infection as it involves the transmission of the disease from one partner to another. Other than the USA, there are other countries in the world too which have been a victim of this killer disease. There are about 20 different kinds of STDs which have spread to about 19 million men and women each year in the United States. Despite the various campaigns initiated for the cause, none has been able to control the spread of these sexually transmitted diseases. This vernal disease generally spreads though unprotected sex with ejaculation or without ejaculation infecting the vagina and the anus. Oral sex is also a culprit behind the spread of these diseases. Some of these vernal diseases are:

  • HIV/AIDS: Among the many sexually transmitted diseases the most common and the most dangerous one is HIV, which can lead to AIDS. The virus spreads rapidly in the body destroying the immune system. It is mostly transmitted when one enjoys unprotected sexual intercourse, gets infected blood during a transfusion and uses infected needles (mostly happens between drug addicts.) It can also spread to the unborn child if the mother has the virus in her. It mostly gets transmitted through the womb or during breastfeeding. This disease affects the immune system directly. The symptoms are quite similar to all other illness like fever, sore throat, diarrhea and fatigue. The treatment is not a very developed one but affected people do live a happy life with continuous medication. The treatment is however expensive.

  • Hepatitis B:  Hepatitis B can happen to a person due to various reasons. The infection can be transmitted sexually or transferred from a pregnant mother to her child and even by blood to blood contact. It might go undetected for some time, as the symptoms are common like jaundice or flu. In case it is a chronic disease it can cause liver damage. Vaccines can prevent Hepatitis B and it can also be treated if detected in an early stage.

  • Chlamydia: It is widely spread in the UK and it is one of the few sexually transmitted diseases which are curable. If it is untreated it can cause a serious complication. It is contiguous and mostly young women are its victims. It generally affects the cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes. The symptoms are vaginal discharge, irregular bleeding and bleeding during intercourse. Chlamydia also leads to infertility. It can be treated with antibiotics.

  • Human Papilloma virus warts the genitals. Pinkish white lumps appear on the genitals and the rectal area but they are painless. It might even develop inside the vagina or the cervix. Its symptoms are vaginal discharge and light bleeding. If left untreated, it can lead to cervical cancer. Condoms can prevent this virus and a vaccine called Gardasil can be taken by females to prevent it and is recommended to girls aged 12 to 26.

  • Genital herpes: This disease is caused by the virus HSV2. They stay hidden inside the body for a long period. Once they come out of dormancy one faces boils and blisters which might be painful. Antiviral medication can cure this.

Practicing safe sex, especially with condoms, can protect people from these sexually transmitted infections. It is also important that both the partners are treated, if infected, so that the infection does not relapse.
