Various medications and their impacts on sexuality

Medicines consumed by an individual have severe side effects at times. Most of the time, one is not aware of after-effects. The sexual functions of human being are widely affected through consumption of various medicines. Erectile dysfunction among men is the most common type of medical side effects. Many a times, in order to enjoy sexual life, individuals stop taking medicines prescribed by the physicians at the risk of their health. A number of medications are responsible but these problems are not systematic or widespread. It varies with every individual. It has been studied that diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes; stress and depression are responsible for erectile problems. This is not just in case of men but women also face sexual dysfunctions due to the aforementioned diseases. In addition to depression and hormonal changes, menopause in women has a negative impact on female sexuality.

The effects of depression and dejection in men often result in fall of sexual libido. Men who are affected by severe depression have erectile problems up to 90% of all cases. In a survey, it has been proved even erectile dysfunction in reality causes depression. In other words both, depression and erectile dysfunction are inversely proportionate among men. Even anti depressant tablets are responsible to various types sexual dysfunction such as low libido, ejaculation and erectile problems. Therefore, in order to get cured one has to sacrifice sexual life for medication life span. “Simple” Anxiety and benzodiazepines used for treatment of anxiety can also cause libido problems. Rather narcoleptics, pills used in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder lead to hormonal changes which disrupt and affect the individual libido.

Medications for cardiovascular diseases also lower the male libido. The main medicine used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases is beta blockers. This medicine is commonly used to treat arterial hypertension, cardiac weakness or angina. Its effect on sexual life depends upon consumption pattern which varies with every individual. Even sometimes it has been noted that many patients refuse to continue their medications so that they could enjoy their sex life. Consumption of medicines such as oestrogen or other sexual hormones like LHRH analogues may result in impotence or result in low libido. It is known that hormone secretion, both in men and women, commands and regulates sexual function. Excessive consumption of any hormones leads to sexual dysfunction. These hormones include contraceptive pills, oestrogen medicines and LHRH analogues. These medicines misbalance the hormone levels in the body causing sexual dysfunction such as vaginal dryness among women and erectile dysfunction among men.

During the course of medication, one must not completely stop consumption of prescribed medicine. This might become health risk. Various other types of medicines are available in the market which allows an individual to enjoy sexual life without much hindrance. Apart from this, the side effects of the medicines are very rare i.e. only 1% of the patients being treated are affected. Thus consumption of anti depressant or beta blockers is not a negative impact on individual’s sexuality and libido.
