Sexually Transmissible Infections – What you need to know

Sex is of immense pleasure to any one of us. However, it’s is very important that one should always have safe sex. Best way to have safe sex is by using condom. Using condoms prevent spreading of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) like HIV/AIDS, Chlamydia, gonorrhea etc. but you should be extra careful using the condom too. However, the best way is to always avoid sex with the infected person. In the following lines, we would be discussing about what are the major STIs which are of major concern to any one of us.

HIV/AIDs – This is the most common STI which is of concern to any one of us and to every country. This is basically a viral infection, being transmitted through the semen, blood and vaginal secretion. Governments of different countries have always been spreading awareness amongst the people to have safe sex in order to avoid HIV/AIDs. This is incurable and no medicine has yet been developed to prevent AID/HIV.

Chlamydia – This is basically a bacterial infection which is most commonly found in young people who are under 25 years of age. This can cause the infertility in woman. There is no symptom in this infection. This infection is increasing, with 47000 infections being reported in year 2006 in comparison to 47000 reported in 2004 in Australia alone.

Gonorrhea – A bacterial infection, sometimes also called “the Clap’, but less common than Chlamydia. Men may experience problem of discharge and severe pain while they urinate. In woman, this virus can cause infertility, like Chlamydia infection, if not treated.

Syphilis – This is now very rare in the countries like Australia, but this can create a lot of problem if this infection is not diagnosed or treated during the pregnancy. It can lead to abnormalities in the unborn child. In adults, it can lead to serious mental and health problem.

Hepatitis B – This type of virus is spread by blood, semen or vaginal secretions. It can lead to liver failure in human beings. Thanks to science that a vaccine is available to treat Hepatitis B infection.

Trichomoniasis – This is very uncommon virus nowadays and can be treated easily. It generally causes the vaginal discharge and some irritation in the women while in men, it causes urethral irritation.

Herpes Simplex virus – This is a very dangerous infection. Once infected, it remains in the body of the person for a whole life. The symptoms of this virus are painful ulcers in the genital areas but it also happens in many cases that there are no symptoms.

Human Papilloma Virus usually called as HPV – This is the most common STI in developed countries, including Australia. There are more than 200 types of HPVs, some of them cause cervical cancers, and some causes genital cancers. Though vaccinations are now available to treat this virus, yet prevention during sex is always a better cure. This virus is so common that most people will have this virus once they start having sex.
