The myths and realities of sex addiction

Is Sex Addiction a myth or reality? This question has raised a controversy in the recent times. With studies, coming out in this regard on regular basis, have added fuel to the already raging controversy. Many of us believe it to be a disease in reality and some dismiss it as simply fictitious. The clinicians are also a divided house on this contentious issue.

Sex addiction means excessive indulgence in sexual activities. It implies to a man who has his thoughts devoted to sex at the most, and possess uncontrollable sexual urge. It also It is a term that has been coined in the early 1980s and since then has been associated with many people who holds a position of respect and importance in our society. These men wield power in their sphere of influence and are known for their sexual indulgence.

The society has reacted sharply on their sexually hyperactivity and readily associated their behavior as a form of addiction and their moral shortcoming. Bill Clinton and Tiger Woods immediately come to our mind when are looking for instances of Sex Addicts. The former, was the President of the US and is labeled to be a sex addict by many near and dear ones.

While the latter, widely regarded as the most celebrated and gifted sportsperson on the planet, publicly admitted to be suffering from sex addiction and received medical treatment for the same.  Traditionally, women are not considered sexually hyperactive but certain studies reveal that it is not true. They are also included in the list of sex addicts.

There are people, who are totally against the theory of sex addiction and do not consider it as a serious issue. They have propounded a theory that people with a high frequency sexual indulgence have a higher libido. Therefore, it is not a serious medical issue and cannot be equated at par with drug addiction or alcoholism, as sex addiction does not produce the same effect in the brain.

David J. Ley, the US based clinical psychologist is the most vocal anti sex addiction theorist. His studies reveal that sexual stimuli when applied on “sex addicts” indicated better electrical brain responses unlike the case of drug addiction. He goes to the extent of saying that it would not have any detrimental effect on the physical health of the individual. Therefore, he emphasizes that it would be not be a good idea to associate sexually hyperactive people with sex related crimes.

Summary

The studies are contradictory and confusing at the same time. This is worthy enough to drive you insane. As they say, your genitals are not your main sex organs, but your brain is. All your impulses initiate in your brain and guide your sexual behavior. However, all you have to do is adopt a practical and balanced approach towards sex and keep your body and brain streamlined.
