Vanessa was the first African-American to win the Miss America crown in1983. Though the same was forfieted after Penthouse magazine published nude photos of her.

She tolerated the jolt and bounced back with a roller-coaster career which saw her make a mark on the R&B circuits as a successful singer.

In the 90s she entered Broadway and since then she has been entertaining audiences with her classy performance. And the decade was very successful for Vanessa, who balanced a parallel acting career both in film an television.

At a ceremony in front of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, she was all smiles as her supportive castmates from her current TV show ‘Ugly Betty’ were all praises for the villainous character. Salma Hayak, the show’s executive producer said:

When we wrote the pilot for ‘Ugly Betty’, we needed a villain and I was worried about who would play that character. We were so happy to get Vanessa. She is brilliant because she is so nasty on the show, but in reality she is the sweetest person.

Vanessa was introduced by her brother Chris Williams, who accompanied her to the ceremony, calling her a trailblazer. Chris further added:

Vanessa is a template for anyone to realize that by dreaming big and believing in yourself, you can overcome any seemingly insurmountable obstacle and that through hard work and perseverance, no one can limit what or who you are.

Indeed, the beauty who recently turned 44 is a girl with nerves of steel.
